Abstract

1469451 Packaging articles with relatively movable internal and external components PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 March 1974 10592/74 Heading B8C An article comprising relatively movable internal and external components is packed for transport by securing the internal component against the external component using threaded rods which pass through openings in the external component. One end of each rod is received in a screw-threaded hole in the internal component and the other end of each rod carries a nut which bears against a rigid support member located against the outer surface of the external component. The outer ends of the rods carrying the nuts, are treated with an adhesive to secure the nut to the rod to form a bolt. When unpacking is desired a spanner is applied to the nuts to unscrew the bolts, this in turn releasing the inner component. As an alternative to adhesive a locking nut may be used. With such an arrangement, loosening of the internal component is effected entirely from outside the outer component. Also the use of internal packing elements which might inadvertently be left in the outer component is avoided. Washing machines, turntables and spin driers may be so packaged. In the preferred embodiment (see Fig. 3), a washing machine has a cabinet 3 through holes in the rear of which threaded bolts 8 pass, the ends of the bolts being received by an inner component. The holes are provided with self-sealing bushes (4) and in use rear support members 5, 6 and 7 are located over the protruding ends of the bolts, adhesive and washers 10 applied, and nuts 11 screwed on to draw the inner component into tight engagement with the cabinet. Release of the inner component is effected merely by unscrewing the nuts. The side of the cabinet has an access opening (15) through which the front end of the internal component may be secured using bolts 16 and 17, braces 13 and 14, and fillers 18. A machine thus packed may be placed upon a base, its edges protected by buffers 24, its sides protected by pads 27, its top protected by buffer 28, and the whole assembly is strapped to secure the parts and placed in a container. A pair of the buffers 24 are recessed at 25 to receive the panel 26 which closes the side access opening of the cabinet.
