Abstract

1469100 Strippers DAYTON PROGRESS CORP 18 Dec 1973 [15 Jan 1973] 58535/73 Heading B3W [Also in Division F2] In punching apparatus a stripper plate 14 is suspended from a die shoe 11 by means of hanger devices 24 each comprising a screw 25 threaded in the plate 14 and having a head 30 resting on a flange 27 of a sleeve 26. Stripper spring assemblies 38 each comprise a spring 46 contained in a cage 44 between a flange 31 and a shoulder 50, of a plunger 48, which abuts a flange 29 of the cage. The dimensions of the spring assemblies and hanger devices are chosen so that the cage or plunger apply a preload to the spring but in the open position of the punching apparatus the spring assemblies apply no stress to the stripper plate or to the plate supports means 25, 26. During punching, the die shoe engages the heads 35 of the plungers 48 and when the stripper plate engages the workpiece, on which it acts as a hold down, compresses the spings 46, the cages entering further into recesses 40 in the die shoe 11. When punches 22 have to be ground, the sleeves 26 and plunger heads 35 are found and the screws 25 adjusted correspondingly. More than one spring may be housed in a cage and the springs may be of different ratings, e.g. to give light pressure initially and heavier pressure towards the end of a punch stroke. The spring assemblies can be used in inverted position.
