A multiple die coining press in which either the upper or lower dies are all mounted together in a carrier which can rock to allow the dies to align themselves automatically in a manner such as to distribute the force evenly between the dies A member 1 is dovetailed to the vertical reciprocating slide of the press and has a partly cylindrical shaped underside 2 against which a complementary shaped block 3 is adjustably retained by screws 4 under the heads of which are located compression springs 5. A slide 6 dovetailed to the block is slidably adjustable and lockable in two directions in a common horizontal plane and carries in two recesses on its underside part-spherical seat inserts 11 receiving the backing members 12 of two upper dies 13. Each die 13 is clamped on the slide by three equi-spaced dogs 14 so that the clamping thrust is radial with respect to the seat 11 to allow for adjustment of the tilt of the die by the screws. The bottom dies 16 are non-adjustably mounted on ejector means on the bed of the press. A removable location plate is used in conjunction with dowels to position the upper die. In operation the slide 6 assembly can tilt about a horizontal axis midway between the faces of the two pairs of dies to self align the dies so that equal blows are produced on the two blanks at each stroke. Alternatively the adjustable dies may be mounted on the bed of the press. Three pairs of dies may be fitted to a press in which case the surface 2 is part-spherical with its centre of curvature at the centre of an equilateral triangle formed by the axes of the three pairs of dies.
