Abstract

1468202 IC engine pistons and cylinders A CELORIO 18 April 1974 17120/74 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] A compression ignition I.C. engine comprises a piston having a working portion 1 and a heat insulating cylindrical crown portion 2 which has an axial length more than half that of the working portion and is coaxial and integral therewith. The portion of the cylinder in which only the crown portion 5 reciprocates is not of smaller diameter than the rest of the cylinder and the crown portion forms with the cylinder a small annular gap 6 greater than the clearance between the working portion of the piston and the cylinder. The cylinder head 4 may be lined with refractory insulating material 4a and the crown portion of the piston may have such material 5a on it. Instead of being lined, the head 4 may be formed with a cavity wall to reduce heat loss.
