[Also in Division F4] In an expansion engine, compressor or coldgas refrigerator having a piston 2 reciprocable in a cylinder 1 to vary the volume of a working space 4, the width of the annular gap 8 between the upper portion 6 of the piston and the cylinder increases in a direction away from the working space. A seal 7 is provided between the lower portion 5 of the piston and the cylinder. A centring ring 10 having circumferentially spaced apertures 11 is provided in the upper end of the gap. The piston may be used as the displacer of either an otherwise conventional cold-gas refrigerator (Fig. 6, not shown), or a refrigerator in which the frusto-conical part of the piston is filled with regenerative material (Fig. 7, not shown), and has an upper, constantdiameter extension. In further modifications, the gap may increase in a step-wise manner (Fig. 2, not shown), the walls of the cylinder may be downwardly divergent over part of their length and the piston of constant diameter (Fig. 3, not shown), or the walls of the frusto-conical part of the piston may be curved. Preferred dimensions and operating conditions and a preferred relationship between gap width and the thermal conductivity of the working medium are given.
