Abstract

1391787 Compressors; hot gas engines M SCHUMAN 2 March 1972 [5 March 1971 18 Feb 1972] 9679/72 Headings F1N and F1S [Also in Division F2] A reciprocating device usable e.g. as a compressor or engine comprises a free piston 12 reciprocable in a cylinder 11 by a compressible fluid therein, the fluid being heated in passageways 19 so that it expands and enters the upper cylinder space 16 to force the piston 12 down, whereafter it is contracted by cooling to allow fluid in the space 17 below the piston to effect the piston return stroke. Heating of the passageways 19 is by means of a heating tube 21a fed from a heating source 23. The cooling of the fluid is effected by a cooling tube 24, 24a, 24b disposed in the region where the passageways 19 open into the cylinder space 16. Insulation 27 separates the heating and cooling tubes. Valves 29, 30 allow the entry of fluid to the spaces 16, 17 when these spaces are expanding. When operating as a compressor gas is delivered to, compressed in and returned from either of the spaces 16 or 17, Fig. 13 (not shown.) This compensates for leakage past the valves and the piston when the spaces are contracting and maintains the piston in a central position. In figures 16 and 17 (not shown) grooves (53) or tubes (61) in the cylinder wall perform the same piston centering function. Other embodiments are described in which the passageways are arranged transversely to the cylinder axis; in which the piston is caused to move in both directions by an alternately expanding and contracting fluid; or in which two pistons, each in a separate cylinder, have cylinder spaces in communication with the same passageways. A gas is the preferred working fluid but a liquid and its vapour may also be used.
