Abstract
1335855 Cold-gas machines PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 30 Dec 1970 [2 Jan 1970] 61761/70 Heading F4H In a cold-gas machine, that is either a coldgas refrigerator or a cold-gas engine, which comprises two piston-like members 2, 3 reciprocable in a cylinder 1, an annular seal 16 of synthetic resin is disposed to inhibit the flow of working medium through the gap between the expansion space 15 and the compression space 10. If medium flows from the compression space along the seal 16 into the gap 14, contaminant present in the medium will freeze out on the cold walls of the gap. To prevent this, a duct 18 opens out of the wall of the piston-like member 3 (shown as a displacer) or the wall of the cylinder at a point which is at all times between the planes containing the axial extremities of the seal, the duct communicating with a buffer space 19 which communicates with the compression space through a second duct 20 incorporating a non-return valve 21 opening towards the compression space. By suitable choice of the volume of the buffer space 19 it is possible to avoid substantially entirely any return flow of medium along the seal.
