1467869 Coiling slivers; alarms and counters SACO-LOWELL CORP 20 Sept 1974 [16 Oct 1973] 41020/74 Heading D1F A coiler delivers sliver into one or more cans each supported, as on a reciprocating turn-table, for simultaneous rotation about its vertical axis and linear translation and comprises can changing apparatus whereby, during doffing of the filled can, an empty can is moved from a distal location onto the can support in a coiling position, irrespective of the position of the can when its coiling movements cease. In the operation of a coiler 10 having two sideby-side deliveries, slivers S, S' fed from a creel (not shown) into ports 19 and passing through a drafting assembly and coiler plate (not shown) discharge into cans C, C', mounted on [rotating tables 20, 20', upon reciprocating base members 22, 22'. At any stage with cans C, C', in position, empty cans EC, EC', are placed manually at their stations 30, 30', thereby cancelling a warning signal of previous absence and setting control circuits in readiness for subsequent operation of the canchanging apparatus. When cans C, C', have been filled with a predetermined yardage of sliver, a cam on a counter 33 actuates a relay circuit to deenergise an electromagnetic clutch which disconnects the main drive from machine 10 and stops the movement of the turntables 20, 20', etc. irrespective of their position. Another circuit is activated to energise a winding of a motor brake unit 38 and cause forward movement of a carriage 36 and can. changing members 32, 32', through pulley 40, timing belt 42, threaded shaft 44 and carriage shaft 34, whereby cans EC, EC', are pushed by curved members 32, 32', along a base 14 a distance sufficient to compel substitution of such cans for the filled cans on tables 20, 20', during which the hold of spring-loaded clamping roller assemblies 24, 26, 28 and 24', 26', 28', is forcibly transferred from filled cans to the incoming empty cans. Movement of members 32, 32', is then stopped and reversed by operation of limit switches engaged by actuator element 48 to effect reverse running and braking by unit 38 to restore the apparatus to the position shown whereat the yardage counter 23 is automatically reset.
