Abstract

1465969 Automatic control of electrostatic charging XEROX CORP 17 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973] 40548/74 Heading G3R In an electrostatic reproduction system, a control signal representing charge on a photoreceptor medium is obtained using a conductive member which physically and electrically engages the medium. As shown in Fig. 2, a photo-conductive belt 17 is driven by a roller 22 past a corona charging device 40 and subsequent exposure and developing stations, Fig. 1 (not shown). The image is transferred to paper 31 passed between drive roller 22 and a transfer roll 32 supplied with a bias voltage 64 which aids image transfer. The charge on the belt 17 is monitored by a sensor 60 responsive to the voltage of roll 32 when the bias supply is switched off and no paper 31 is present, as detected by a sensor 68. The voltage sensor 60 is connected to a circuit 66 which controls the power supply 45 to the corona device 40. The control may also be made manually, or in response to a detector roll contacting the belt 17 immediately after passing the corona device 40, Fig. 3 (not shown). Other system parameters, such as developer roll bias or illumination intensity, may also be controlled.
