Abstract
1465541 Circulators SELENIA INDUSTRIE ELETTRONICHE ASSOCIATE SpA 30 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 04404/74 Heading H1W Anon-reciprocal multiport device, e.g. a circulator, makes use of peripheral propagation modes and a polarizing magnetic field which is non-uniform in the vicinity of the tapered matching sections of the ports. As described, a four-port circulator comprises a ferrite element 2, ground plane 3 and striplines A, B, C, D integral with and smoothly merging into a planar junction member 5. The path of the peripheral wave coupling ports B and C is shown by the line P, the other ports being similarly coupled in pairs. In order to match the peripheral waves to the TEM waves on the striplines, the intensity of the magnetic field varies from a maximum at the centre of the junction 5 to a minimum at the outer ends of the matching sections of the striplines. This is indicated by the non-uniform spacing of the magnetic contour lines 8 which indicate equal increments of magnetic field intensity. The required distribution may be obtained by means of a soft-iron element 6 located at the centre of the junction 8, or by decreasing the diameter of the permanent magnet 7 (see Fig. 5b, not shown).
