Abstract

1465047 Sawing L M CROWLE 17 May 1974 [23 May 1973] 24504/73 Heading B5L A log cutting apparatus comprises a vertically cutting band, chain or, as shown, circular saw carried at one end of a support arm which is pivoted at its other end about a fixed horizontal axis and upwardly biased to clear a log to be cut, and provided with a handle located laterally of the plane of the saw. As shown, the support arm 2 is pivoted about a horizontal pin 3 carried by a fixed support 1. The arm carries at its free end a circular saw blade 4 belt driven from a pulley 7 which is coaxial with the pin 3 and in turn driven, as via a belt, by, e.g. an electric motor in the support 1, tractor P.T.O. or stationary petrol or diesel engine. The upper periphery of the blade 4 is surrounded by a guard 8. The arm is upwardly biased by a counterweight 11 acting through a cable 9 and is provided with a laterally extending saw depressing handle 12. A log support 13 comprises a trestle-mounted V-shaped trough. In operation, a log may be advanced along the trough manually or mechanically, the blade being brought down at intervals to cut the log. In small versions of the apparatus, the operator may depress the handle 12 with one hand whilst steadying the log with the other.
