732,524. Sawing. SHORT, R. P. J. Oct. 14, 1953, No. 28357/53. Class 145. A portable sawing machine for cutting tree trunks or other units into beams or planks comprises a beam 18 and slideway 17 along which a saw housing 11 can be drawn by cables 28 wrapped round drums 29 at or near each end of the slideway, and a pair of saws 13, 15 disposed in the housing, one slightly ahead of the other, to make cuts lying at an angle of between 0 degrees and 180 degrees to each other and meeting at an apex. The beam 18 is mounted on a pair of feet 20 held in adjusted position by clamps 27 on a pair of supports 21 which are secured to the ends of the tree trunk by cables 23 and strainers 25 and, if required, spikes 26. The saw 13 is driven by belts or other transmission means from a motor 33 and is connected by helical or other gearing to the saw 15. Additional guide means for the housing 11 may comprise a bracket 44 engaging a rail 46 on the beam 18. Circular saws or chain saws may be used.
