Abstract

1,082,492. Sawing. W. D. PEFFERS. Feb. 11, 1965 [Feb. 13, 1964], No. 6062/64. Heading B5L. A portable saw comprises cutting means, a prime mover, and a belt-drive and flexible drive shaft between the prime mover and cutting means. The saw may be used for pruning branches of trees and the cutting means may be a circular saw, a chain saw or a reciprocating saw. As described the cutting means is a circular saw 7 which is rotatably mounted in a housing 17 having a casing 9 covering approximately a quarter of the saw and four radial fingers 12 each of which may be laid under or over a branch during a cutting operation. The saw is connected by travel gearing 6 to a shaft in a tube 10, the shaft being connected to the flexible drive shaft which is located in an outer casing 8 and connected to a pulley 18 driven by a belt from a pulley 3 of an internal combustion motor 1. The pulley 18 is carried by a bar 19 at one end mounted on a pivot and at the other end adapted to be moved against a spring 21 by a cam 11 on a lever 5 to tension the belt, an adjusting screw 22 being provided. The belt acts as a slipping clutch and shockabsorber to the motor which has a harness to permit it being carried on the back of an operator.
