Abstract

1463632 Tunnelling; underpass bridge J C GENTON and C L J BRESSO 10 Jan 1975 1182/75 Headings E1F and E1G A prefabricated underpass 29 is positioned below another traffic roadway, e.g. a railway track on an embankment, without stopping the traffic on the roadway by positioning a temporary supporting device or plating 20 which does not interfere with or disturb the track and which is designed to support the track exclusive of the momentary overloads due to the traffic, and hydraulically driving a penetration structure 26 including the prefabricated underpass 29 through the embankment, the penetration structure being provided with jacks 34, 36 which support the plating 20 and take over the momentary ovreloads at the times of passing of traffic. As described the plating 20 which supports the track consists of beams 21 positioned on each side of each rail and held in position by ties 22 (Fig. 10), the beams 21 being supported by transfer beams 23 which in turn are supported by girders 24 and vertical supports 25 (see Fig. 2). The penetration structure 26 consists of the prefabricated underpass 29 and a cutter shield 30. The structure 26 is thrust into the embankment by hydraulic jacks 27, this penetration being facilitated by action of a mining or cutting machine 31 working ahead of the structure 26. During the driving of the structure 26 any loads on the track due to traffic are transferred via the transfer beams 23 to jacks 36 carried by girders 35 on the cutter shield 30 and to jacks 34 mounted in holes 33 in the roof 32 of the underpass 29. During driving the structure 26 is guided by a device 40 (Fig. 7) mounted on the bottom of the front end of the structure 26. When the device 40 is raised earth will collect underneath the structure 26 and the structure will tend to be lifted or move upwardly and when the device 40 is lowered it will form furrows in the ground ahead of the structure which will then tend to move downwardly. When the underpass is in position the cutter shield 30 is removed, the jacks 34 are removed and the holes 33 plugged, ballast is restored between the track and the roof of the underpass and the plating 20 is removed.
