Abstract

511,557. Shields for miners. HANCOCK, E. J. L. April 26, 1938, No. 12503. [Class 85] A shield for miners has a surface sloping downwardly from the working face, reaction of falling roof material on said surface tending to move the shield towards the face. The shield may be built in situ of lumber, metal &c. and comprises an open girder frame 10 covered with sheet metal &c. to provide an upper supporting surface 14 contiguous with a more inclined driving surface 15 terminating in a vertical part 16, the whole being supported on rollers 17, or on wheels, selflaying tracks &c. For working in advance, the parts 15. 16 are provided with an aperture 19 so that'lining sections 20 may be erected within the shield to enclose a roadway leading to the shield. The surface 14 may be hinged for vertical adjustment, and the shield may have hand or power propelling means. A line of shields may be erected side by side and may support a floating track comprising rails 118 on wheel-supported sleepers 112, while the apertures 19 may be formed at the meeting edges of adjacent shields; trucks 18 run on the rails which terminate in a turntable 120 by which the trucks may be diverted to rails 218 leading through the roadway. Alternatively, floating conveyers may be provided and deliver to a conveyer passing through the roadway. With a high working face, elevated platforms 21, Fig. 4, are provided to support workers and may have chutes 22 for delivery of spoil..For working in retreat, roads 120, Fig. 4, are driven to the boundary and a lateral excavation is made in which a series of linked shields is erected; excavation is then effected back to the entry face 24.
