Abstract

1463624 Continuous casting SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd and SUMITOMO SHIPBUILDING & MACHINERY CO Ltd 6 March 1974 [6 March 1973] 10090/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division G3] The level of molten metal in a continuous casting mould is monitored, e.g. by using a gamma ray source 11, and a slide valve 2 is operated to adjust progressively the size of the orifice of a discharge nozzle of a tundish 1, which feeds the mould, to reduce any difference between the level and a predetermined reference level. A display indicator 13 indicates or records a signal from a scintillator 12 and this is compared with a reference level signal from a setting means 9. Any difference between the signal is fed to an amplifier 7 and compared with a signal fed back from a potentiometer 5 whose sliding contact is moved by a piston of a cylinder 4 which is moved in correspondence with that of a cylinder 3 which operates the slide valve 2. Output form the amplifier 7 operates a valve 10 for control of the cylinder 3. To avoid the need to change the tundish nozzle or slide valve owing to erosion, the basic maximum size of the orifice opening can be changed in stepwise fashion by use of a switch 6 to select different pairs of resistors, Fig. 3 (not shown), in the potentiometer 5 which correspond to these openings, so that a different range of opening sizes is selected by the normal operation of the sliding contact. To prevent complete closure of the tundish orifice, and therefore clogging, a voltage is applied to the potentiometer circuit or a limit switch is attached to its sliding contact.
