Abstract

1463565 Treating oil palm fruit GUTHRIE CORP Ltd 14 Oct 1975 [14 Oct 1974] 44465/74 Headings A2E, A2D Fruit bunches of the oil palm Elaeis guineensis Jacq., and/or the oil palm Elaeis oleifera (HBK) are exposed to a gaseous mixture of air and an unsaturated hydrocarbon to loosen the fruit from the bunch. Hydrocarbons specified include acetylene, ethylene, propylene and butylene. Treatment is carried out for at least 5 minutes at room temperature, preferably higher, using a gaseous mixture containing at least 0.01% hydrocarbon. Superatmospheric or subatmospheric pressure to cause the hydrocarbon gas to enter the tissues of the bunch may allow shorter treatment times or lower hydrocarbon concentrations to be used. The contentration of carbon dioxide in the treating gas may be reduced by means of an absorbent such as NaOH, this also shortening the treatment time. Heating during or after the treatment will also accelerate the action of the hydrocarbon and sterilize the enzyme system to prevent the build up of free fatty acids.
