Abstract
Ethylene oxide is mixed with a combustion inhibitor which is sufficiently efficient in a small enough amt. to allow the mixt. to be used at around atmospheric pressure. One vol. inhibitor per vol. ethylene oxide is used at the most. Suitable inhibitors are a brominated cpd., such as CF3Br, CClF2Br, tetrafluorodibromoethane or MeBr. The mixt. can be made by vaporising the ethylene oxide and the combustion inhibitor and expanding them under a pressure near to atmospheric. The mixt. is used for disinfection, sterilisation and/or killing insects. The process simultaneously overcomes the two main hazards of ethylene oxide, viz. its flammability and toxicity. The combustion inhibitor overcomes the flammability, but because it need be used in small quantity only, the pressure need not be raised substantially above atmospheric, with the attendant danger of escape of toxic gas.
