Abstract

1462931 Propeller shaft; cathodic protection thereof SKARPENORD AS 20 March 1974 [21 March 1973] 12293/74 Heading C7E A propeller shaft 2 for a ship's propeller 5 has a liner sleeve 10 on the shaft and a layer of electrical insulation 11 between the sleeve and shaft to insulate the shaft from the metal hull of a ship 4 in which the shaft is installed. The insulating layer may be a ceramic such as alumina; the layer 11 may be plasma-sprayed. The shaft is used in a cathodic protection system comprising a current source 12, an electric contact 13, 14, and anodes 15 insulated from the hull; insulator 9 and insulating bolts 8 serve to insulate shaft 2 from the driveshaft 6. Layer 11 may extend over the face of the propeller hub as shown.
