Abstract

614,799. Preventing incrustation. CHANAZ, J. P. ST. A. DE. July 30, 1946, No. 22713. [Class 123(i)] In protecting a ship's hull against fouling by making it cathodic to an electric current which is passed between said hull and one or more anodes attached to but insulated from the hull, each anode 3, preferably of magnetite or silicon carbide, is located at the bottom of a groove 2 in an insulating glass, &c. carrier 1. The anode and carrier are jointed at 4 in a dove-tail manner, and the carrier groove is of tapering form with rounded edges. Bosses 5 may be provided on the back of the carrier for water-tight engagement with holes in a bilge keel or the hull plating, said bosses being drilled to accommodate electric leads 6 the ends of which are embedded in the anode. Preferably two anodes are used, each extending about two-thirds of the water-line length of the hull on opposite sides thereof. The hull plates may be covered with an insulating layer of synthetic resin, &c., having a conducting outer coating, e.g. of sprayed metal.
