Abstract

1462746 Disinfecting sewage VSES N-I INST VETERINAR VIRUSOL I MIKROBIOL 11 Feb 1975 5788/75 Heading C1C Micro-organisms in sewage are inactivated by subjecting the sewage sequentially to: (i) heating to not more than 100‹ C. (e.g. 80-90‹ C.), (ii) pressurisation, (iii) a pressure drop by passing through a nozzle, (iv) steam injection to produce a temp. above 100‹ C. (e.g. 130-140‹ C.), (v) holding under pressure at above 100‹ C. for a period sufficient for inactivation. The above steps (which may be preceded by comminution of dispersed solids to a size of 4-6 mm.) are preferably effected thus: (i) by heat exchange with the inactivated product, or by passing steam through the nozzle of a "jet apparatus" to provide a vacuum which draws sewage into the chamber of the apparatus; (ii) by pumping; (iii) and (iv) by passing the sewage through the nozzle of a "jet apparatus" to provide a vacuum which draws steam into the chamber of the apparatus; (v) by passing for ¢-15 min. through a coiled pipe whose outlet is controlled by a valve, and which contains cyclones (fastened metallic helical inserts) to impart a helical motion to the sewage.
