1462423 Animal feed ATLAS AS 11 March 1974 10749/74 Heading A2B A dried animal feed substantially free from pathogenic bacteria is prepared from a moist proteinaceous material such as poultry manure by mixing the material with partly dried material to obtain a mixture having a predetermined water content, drying the mixture in a rotating drum 4 with a concurrent hot gas flow to a water content of at least 10% by weight, separating the partly dried material from the hot gas e.g. in a cyclone 5, pasteurising the partly dried material in a rotating drum 10 with a countercurrent of a sterilised moisture-containing gas providing a sterile atmosphere of at least 90% humidity and at atmospheric pressure and 100‹C for 25 minutes and finally cooling the material. The raw material is mixed in a hopper 1 with the partly dried material which is taken from the distributing box 8 beneath the cyclone 5 and passed into the drying drum in which the hot atmosphere is produced by an oil burner 3. The hot gas from the cyclone is drawn off by pump 6 and divided into two streams, one passing to the burner 3 to control the temperature and moisture content of the hot gas, the other passing to a second cyclone 16 and then to a deodorising furnace 17 and then to the atmosphere. Part of the deodorised gas may provide the sterilised gas for the pasteurising drum 10 as well as hot gas for heating the pasteurising drum.
