Abstract

1461901 Centrifugal pumps SKF (UK) LTD 23 June 1975 26595/75 Reading F1C A water pump unit for an I.C. engine comprises a shaft 6 carrying a pump impeller 7 at one end and with a pulley 10 fixed on the other end, an annular pressed metal member 23 which carries one bearing ring 20 of a rolling contact bearing and, in use, holds it stationary, and a rotary liquid seal 29, 30, the member 23 having an axially extending flange part 24 which is of a larger diameter than the impeller and'is arranged to be fixed either over or, as shown, within a tubular part 4 of a pump housing 1 to close the housing and allow the unit to be mounted as a whole on the pump housing with the impeller within the housing. The other bearing ring 18 carries the pulley 10, which in turn supports the shaft 6. The flange 24 may be a tight push fit within the tubular part 4 or may be bonded to it, or instead or in addition may be secured to it by a clip ring 32 having lugs 33 formed with portions 34 which engage against one end of an annular recess 35. The member 23 may support the outer bearing ring 18 rather than the inner bearing ring 20, and in this case is of narrow radial width to fit between the bearing ring 18 and the tubular part 4. The housing 1 may be a separate casting as shown or may be formed wholly or in part as an integral part of the engine cylinder block or head.
