Abstract

1359379 Centrifugal pumps SKF (UK) Ltd 24 Jan 1972 [28 Jan 1971] 3400/71 Heading F1C A water pump for an internal combustion engine comprises a cover 1 including a boss 2 having a bore 3, a shaft 13 extending through the bore 3, carrying an impeller 16 and driving belt pulley 28, a water seal 19 surrounding the shaft and a roller contact bearing 7 having an inner bearing ring 8 fixed to the shaft, an outer bearing ring 9 fixed in the boss 2 and a single row of balls 10 or rollers. The centre of the belt groove 32 is axially aligned with the centres of the balls 10. As shown bearing ring 9 is an interference fit in aluminium alloy boss 2 and is located by snap ring 11. Bearing ring 8 is an interference fit or adhered to, e.g. by epoxy resin, the mild steel shaft 13 and is located by snap ring 14. A flinger 25 is arranged in chamber 24 to prevent water seeping through face seal 19 reaching the bearing 7 by flinging it out through holes 26. The bearing is a deepgroove ball bearing. Water entering through inlet 4 is forced to the right by radial vane impeller 16.
