1461826 Refuse compactors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 25 June 1974 [26 April 1974] 28135/74 Heading A4A [Also in Division B8] In a household refuse compactor the refuse container 16 is pivotally mounted on the door 14 of the compactor between the side edges of the door, and springs 112 urge the container toward the mounted edge of the door so that the container pivots with the door as the door moves from an extreme open position to an intermediate position in which the container is aligned with the door opening and then moves along an approximately linear path into the compactor as the door closes. As the container enters the compactor it engages a plate (132) spaced inwardly from the side of the compactor to cause the container to pivot against the bias of the springs 112. The container is mounted on the door by means of a column 90, the column and door each being symmetrically about a horizontal axis so that the column and door may be inverted for connection of the door to the other side of the compactor. A bracket 58 circumferentially extending around the lower side of the container sits in a bracket 128 at the base of the column. A clamp 62 is secured by a toggle closure around the top of the container and has a projection 86 receivable in a U-shaped channel in the column and legs 88 receivable in slots 124 in the column. The column is secured to mounting pins 96 by means of brackets 94. The pins 96 seat in cups 100 supported by springs 104 so that during compression the container can bear against the compactor base.
