Abstract

1458866 Foamed olefine polymers grafted with styrene BASF AG 7 May 1974 [8 May 1973] 19997/74 Heading C3C A foamed olefine polymer grafted with 10-90% by wt. of styrene is made by mixing the polymer with a volatile expanding agent at a temperature above its m.p. and under a pressure at which foaming of the mixture is prevented and then extruding the mixture into a zone of lower pressure at which foaming takes place. The olefine polymer may be polyethylene or a copolymer of at least 50% by wt. of ethylene and a vinyl ester of a saturated C 2-5 carboxylic acid e.g. vinyl acetate, an ester of an unsaturated C 3-5 carboxylic acid and a C 1-20 alcohol, e.g. n-butyl acrylate, or an unsaturated C 3-5 carboxylic acid. The olefine polymer may be graft polymerized with styrene during the above mixing. In the examples the grafted polymers were mixed with talc and methyl chloride, with optionally butane, and extruded through a sheeting die.
