Abstract

1460621 Foamed mixtures of olefine polymers and styrene polymers BASF AG 7 May 1974 [8 May 1973 22 March 1974] 19998/74 Heading C3C A foam is made of a mixture of (A) an olefine polymer and (B) 10-95% by wt. of a styrene polymer by mixing the polymers with a volatile expanding agent in the presence in addition of 0À5-10% by wt. of (C) a hydrogenated styrene/ butadiene block polymer or (D) an olefine polymer grafted with styrene, at a temperature above the melting point of the polymer mixture and under a pressure which is above the vapour pressure of the expanding agent at the temperature of mixing and then extruding the mixture into a zone of lower pressure at which foaming takes place. The foam comprises the styrene polymer of particle size less than 50Á dispersed in a continuous phase of the olefine polymer. In the examples mixtures of poly ethylene or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and polystyrene with hydrogenated styrene/ butadiene block polymer or polyethylene grafted with styrene and optionally talc were made and granulated, then mixed with methyl chloride and optionally butane or butene in an extruder and foamed through a sheeting die.
