1458710 Aromatic Schiff's bases F HOFFMAN LA ROCHE & CO AG 2 Oct 1974 [3 Oct 1973] 42771/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division C4] The invention comprises Schiff's bases of the formula wherein X represents -CH = N- or-N=CH- and R represents a (C 1 -C 10 ) n-alkyl group. The compounds in which X represents -CH=N- may be obtained by reacting a compound of the formula with p-aminobenzonitrile, and the compounds in which X represents -N=CH- may be obtained by reacting a compound of the formula with p-cyanobenzaldehyde. They have useful liquid crystal properties and may be employed in electro-optical devices.
