Abstract

1458707 Colour electro-photography XEROX CORP 16 May 1974 [17 May 1973] 21770/74 Heading G2H A multi-colour copying machine of the kind having a photo-conductive surface 12, includes: means 16 for uniformly charging the surface 12; at least one neutral density sample 32 having a preselected density corresponding to substantially the pre-determined cut-off density of toner particles deposited on a single colour electrostatic latent image recorded on said charged surface 12; means for exposing the charged surface 12 to a single colour light image of an original document 25 to record thereon said single colour latent image, said exposing means being arranged to illuminate said sample 32 and project a light image thereof on to the charged surface 12 to record thereon a sample electrostatic latent image having a potential intermediate the single colour latent image and the non- image regions of the charged surface 12; means 38 for depositing toner particles, complementary in colour to the single colour latent image, on the charged and exposed surface 12; and means 28 for sensing the potential of the sample latent image and electrically biasing the toner depositing means 38 to a potential corresponding to the sample latent image potential so that toner particles are deposited on regions of the photo-conductive surface 12 having a potential substantially greater than the potential of the sample latent image. In a three colour machine, as shown, a different neutral density sample 32, 34, 36 is used for each of the three different colour separation exposures, the samples 32, 34, 36 being carried on a rotatable disc 22. Suitable control circuity is described.
