Abstract

1457935 Improving moulded surfaces GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 12 Aug 1974 [4 Sept 1973] 35494/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division B2] An isocyanate based composition is applied to the surface of a moulded thermoset substrate in a mould to provide a thermosetting coating minimizing defects such as sink marks, cracks and porosity in the surface of the substrate. The composition comprises a mould release agent, an isocyanate-terminated material containing unreacted isocyanate groups and material containing reactive hydrogen groups. The isocyanate material may comprise a semi or quasi urethane prepolymer and the source of hydrogen atoms may be a polyol or polyester. Many examples of standard materials are given. The coating composition may be applied by compression or injection moulding in the same or different mould to that in which the substrate was compression or injection moulded. The coating has a thickness of less than 15 thou and preferably 0À5-5 thou and is moulded under a pressure of 300- 1000 p.s.i. The coating composition may also include additives such as filler (less than 20% by wt.), unsaturated polyesters in styrene, pigments, metal flake, glass fibres (less than 20% by wt.) and electrically conductive carbon black for producing a surface which can be electroplated, electrostatically pointed or serve as a electromagnetic shield or reflector. The substrate may comprise a glass fibre reinforced polyester containing a low-shrink additive e.g. polymethyl methacrylate.
