Abstract

Articles made by molding sheet molding compound are coated by injecting into the sealed mold liquid compositions comprising (1) a vinyl ester resin formed by reaction of a poly epoxide resin and an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, (2) a low shrink additive and (3) a silicate filler having a sheet-like structure such as a talc or a mica. These compositions are used to smooth surfaces, fill porosity and other voids and to eliminate or reduce sink marks. Coatings typically are cured in less than two minutes and appear able to provide many features of normal painting without paint facilities except possibly those needed for touch-up. They have good cross-hatch adhesion, and can adhere to an uncleaned SMC molding.
