Abstract
1457508 Carbon fibre SECURICUM S A 16 April 1974 [15 Jan 1973] 1930/74 Heading C1A Carbon fibre is made by passing a multifilament sheet, tow or web of precursor fibre through an oxygenation zone comprising at least two stages, a first stage C in which the precursor fibre is contacted with oxygen and heated to 220-250‹C to take up oxygen without degradation, and a second stage D where the partly oxygenated fibre is heated in the presence of oxygen to 260-300‹C, the fibre passing through the oxygenation zone being held in sufficient tension B, E to prevent shrinkage of fibre during heating and oxygenation, and thereafter passing the fibre through a carbonising zone comprizing at least one stage where the fibre is heated to 1050-1100‹C under non-oxidizing conditions, to produce a fibre with a mean Young's modulus of at least 25 x 10<SP>6</SP> p.s.i. and a mean tensile strength of at least 250,000 p.s.i. The carbonizing zone may also comprise a first stage F heated to 600-700‹C and a second stage G heated to 1050-1100‹C. The precursor fibre may be a carbon-containing synthetic polymer fibre, particularly a polymer or copolymer of acrylonitrile.
