Abstract

Alkylanilines are prepared by heating aniline with an alcohol in the presence of an iodine-containing compound which acts as a catalyst. In an example, dimethylaniline is prepared by heating aniline with methyl alcohol and methyl iodide; the aqueous residue remaining after separation of the dimethylaniline is evaporated to dryness and re-used as a catalyst in the process. Instead of methyl iodide, hydriodic acid, ammonium iodide, alkylphenylammonium iodides, &c. may be used.
