Abstract

1457257 Photomultipliers EMI Ltd 6 Dec 1973 [13 Dec 1972] 57564/72 Heading H1D In a method of operating a photomultiplier tube, the tube having a photocathode 3, a dynode 4 and focusing electrodes 7, 10, there being periods in the operation when photoelectrons are diverted from impinging on dynode 4, the method includes the step of pulsing focusing electrode 10 to a potential negative relative to the photocathode potential during said periods, the first focusing electrode being conductively connected to said dynode electrode which is maintained at a positive potential relative to photocathode potential. The arrangement enables the tube sensitivity to be initially reduced when observing short duration, bright events such as in laser remote densitometers, and a rapid return to maximum sensitivity in view of the reduced likelihood of a build up of space charge at the photocathode. Focusing electrode 7 may be permanently connected to the first (or only) dynode 4, or may be connected externally. Switch means may enable electrode 7 to be connected to electrode 10, or to dynode 4 alone when the suppression feature is required.
