Abstract

1,129,768. Image intensifying device. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 18 Jan., 1967 [20 Jan., 1966], No. 2701/67. Heading H4F. [Also in Division H1] An image intensifying tube device comprises a plurality of consecutive, optically coupled sections 2, 3 and 4, each having a photocathode, 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> and 4<SP>1</SP> respectively, and a phosphor screen 2<SP>11</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> and 4<SP>11</SP> respectively. Cathode 21 and screen 4<SP>11</SP> are formed on the ends of the tube, and screen 2<SP>11</SP> and cathode 3<SP>1</SP> are formed on either side of a glass plate. Screen 3<SP>11</SP> and cathode 4<SP>1</SP> have a similar construction. The positive terminal of a 20 kV source is applied to screen 4<SP>11</SP> and to the screen/ cathode pairs 2<SP>11</SP>/3<SP>1</SP> and 3<SP>11</SP>/4<SP>1</SP> via respective current limiting resistors 5 and 6. The negative terminal of the source is connected to cathode 2<SP>1</SP> and to the screen/cathode pairs 2<SP>11</SP>/3<SP>1</SP> and 311/41 via respective thyristor switches 7 and 8, initially open. A light pulse is incedent on the cathode 2<SP>1</SP> from time t 1 to t 2 (see Fig. 2). With switches 7 and 8 open, the 30 kV appears across section 2 and if switch 7 is closed at time t 2 electrons will flow from cathode 2<SP>1</SP> to screen 2<SP>11</SP> for the period indicated at Fig. 2(2). The flow of electrons to screen 211 will cause the screen to brighten up to time t 2 and then decay. Closure of switch 7 transfers the 30 kV across section 3, when from time t 2 to t 3 when switch 8 is closed, the decaying brightness of the screen 211 causes a corresponding decaying flow of electrons from cathode 3<SP>1</SP> to screen 3<SP>11</SP>, as indicated shaded at Fig. 2(3). Integration of the impinging electrons on screen 311 causes it to brighten up to time t 3 and then decay. The closure of switch 8 transfers the 30 kV across section 4 and the decaying flow of electrons from cathode 4<SP>1</SP> shown shaded at Fig. 2(4) is integrated on screen 4<SP>11</SP> to produce a much intensified image. The screens 2<SP>11</SP>, 311 and 4<SP>11</SP> should have increasing retentivity.
