Abstract

1456396 Oxidized cellulose LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION 17 Oct 1973 48440/73 Headings C3A and C3H [Also in Division C6] Oxidized cellulosic material is prepared by contacting cellulosic material with aqeuous alkali having a concentration of 2-50% by weight of the alkali and then heating the alkali-contacted cellulosic material in the presence of oxygen to a temperature between 25‹ and 100‹ C., whereby oxidation of the cellulosic material is effected. The alkali, e.g. aqueous alkali metal hydroxide, may contain 2-500 p.p.m. of cobalt (II) chloride to facilitate the subsequent oxidation. According to Example 1, ground sugar cane bagasse is slurried with 10% sodium hydroxide containing 5 p.p.m. of calcium chloride, the treated material passed through a heated oven wherein air is blown on to the bagasse and from which the resulting oxidized bagasse material emerges as dry-to-the-touch, light brown flakes, <SP>1</SP>/ 16 -inch thick.
