Abstract

1456197 Coil winding CRYOGENICS CONSULTANTS Ltd 20 Nov 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 53635/72 Heading B3A A method of winding electromagnetic coils comprises rotating a mandrel 2 so as to wind a conductor wire 18 on it and pressing the part of the wire being wound on the mandrel to a predetermined radius. The coils are used in solenoids and they may be superconductive. The mandrel has end plates 4 and the wire 18 is fed through a guide tool 10 mounted on a tool post 6, which engages a lead screw 8. The mandrel, or a previously wound layer of wire, is wrapped with a layer 22 of material such as glass tissue or fabric and the tool 10 is preset by a micrometer hand wheel 12 to press the wire 18 into the interleaving layer 22. Tension in the wire is adjusted both by the tool and the wire supply. Notches 14, 16 in the tip of the tool 10, which are formed as part of a screw thread, engage and guide the wire, the notch 16 engaging the previously wound turn ensuring that it remains correctly positioned.
