Abstract

1448819 Screened cable UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 22 Oct 1973 [18 Oct 1972] 47939/72 Heading H1A A screened high-frequency cable comprises a braided wire shield 3 and a magnetic tape 20 of, for example, Mu-metal (Registered Trade Mark) 0À002 inches in thickness wound in a manner which does not result in an increase in diameter at the overlap 21. When the Mu-metal tape is used it should have previously been annealed to allow it to stretch by more than 10% without fracture. The cable may be completed by a further metal braided shield and an outer jacket, or the further metal braided shield may be followed by a second magnetic tape and a third metal braided shield. A process for applying the magnetic tape comprises advancing the cable through a rotating tubular die 1b while the tape 5 is led from spool 4 over guide rod 9, angularly adjusted for minimum friction to enter a slot (1c, Fig. 2, not shown) in the die, substantially tangential to the die bore, along one side face. The guide rod 9 is carried by arm 8 which is fixed to the die. The rate of advance of the cable is adjusted so that the tape is applied with an overlap 25% for example, and the tension on the tape is adjustable by the device comprising a spring 6 and nut 7 on a screw threaded part of die portion 1a. As the upper lap of tape engages the lower the lower layer is compressed radially inwards to a greater extent than the upper lap is stretched.
