Abstract

1448820 Winding strip UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 5 Dec 1974 10187/75 Heading B3E [Also in Division H1] A process for applying the magnetic tape to a screened cable as described in Division H1 comprises advancing the cable through a rotating tubular die 10 while the tape 8 is led from spool 14 over guide bar 15, to enter a slot 13 in the die portion 12 adjacent to the tangential side face 13A, see Fig. 5A. The guide bar 15 is carried by arm 18 which is fixed to the die. The rate of advance of the cable is adjusted so that the tape is applied with an overlap 25% for example, and the tension on the tape is adjustable by the device comprising a spring 16 and nut 17 on a screw threaded part of the die portion 11. The edge 20 of the slot applies a radially inwards pressure on the tape so that the overlapping portion depresses the underlying portion radially inwards. The tape enters the slot at an angle of about 70 degrees to the die axis.
