Abstract

642,521. Electric incandescent lamp filaments. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 30, 1944, No. 21166. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1943. [Class 39(ii)] [Also in Group XL(a)] A coiled filament for an electric lamp comprises a main coil of thick wire and a second coil of finer wire, connected in shunt with the main coil and having convolutions. of a diameter which is essentially the same as that of the convolutions of the main coil, positioned substantially coaxially with the convolutions of the main coil so as to cross them and intervene between them. The filament is made by winding- on a mandrel M, Fig. 2, a wire 11 of elastic material to form the main coil, winding under tension a finer wire 13 (Fig. 7, not shown) to form the second coil having convolutions which cross at 15 the convolutions of the main coil and which contact the mandrel between the said convolutions, heat-treating the wires, cutting the assembly to the individual filament lengths, and chemically disintegrating the mandrel. Two finer wires can be wound side by side over and between the coils of the main wire. One or more additional windings may be wound over the main coil and the second coil. The two coils can be wound in opposite helical senses with the same or different pitches or in the same helical sense with different pitches.
