1455248 Preparing supported catalysts UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 22 Nov 1973 [30 Nov 1972] 55466/72 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions Cl and C7] A catalytic material or a catalyst component material is deposited as an essentially monatomic layer upon the exposed area of a substantially non-pulverluent, non-porous and non- fibrous ceramic support by bombarding a source of the material with energetic ions to sputter it onto the support, the co-deposition of unwanted material being avoided by control of the purity of the atmosphere and the bombarding ions. Other components of the catalytic system may be co-deposited by sputtering or as one or more layers on the first layer, the coated substrate may then be treated to react the components together. Catalysts comprising 0.2 and 0.02 monatomic layer of Pt on a single crystal of sapphire are described, the activity of the former being improved by heating at 1100‹C.
