Abstract

1454263 Glazing ceramics K W HILTON 13 Dec 1973 [19 Dec 1972] 58652/72 Heading C1M In a method of manufacturing a ceramic article, an unfired ceramic article is formed (A) and then subjected to a drying operation C in which the moisture content in the unfired article is reduced, the dried but still unfired article is decorated (D), the decorated article is coated with a glaze medium (E), and finally the decorated and glaze-coated article is fired (F) in a kiln to fire the ceramic and fuse the glaze in a single operation. The article may be tableware, for example a mug or cup (the handle being attached (B) before the drying). In the drying operation the moisture content is preferably reduced to not more than 10%, e.g. by warm air jets. The decoration may be by screen printing (Fig. 2, not shown), and the glaze, in aqueous form, applied by dipping or spraying.
