Abstract

1453995 Protecting converters B B C BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 28 March 1974 [30 March 1973] 13833/74 Heading H2F [Also in Division H3] A thyristor T 1 has an auxiliary firing circuit comprising a semi-conductor rectifier, e.g. auxiliary thyristor HT 1 , connected between cathode and gate with its gate and cathode connected so that in the absence of a normal firing pulse, the auxiliary thyristor breaks down to provide a firing pulse if the voltage across the thyristor T 1 exceeds a given value. The arrangement is particularly suitable for protecting series connected thyristors. The voltage at which protection is effected may be altered by connecting a plurality of auxiliary thyristors in series or by connecting a zener or avalanche diode in the auxiliary circuit.
