A converter in which each rectifier comprises a number of thyristors in series is provided with a damping circuit connected across the rectifier chain which is so dimensioned that the ringing occurring, on switching off a thyrister, does not exceed its rated peak inverse voltage. Overvoltage protection means is also provided.
