Abstract
1289632 Protecting converters GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 21 Jan 1970 [28 Jan 1969] 2892/70 Heading H2F In a converter comprising at least two series pairs of alternately conductive thyristors 20, 23, 30, 33, connected across supply lines 12, 16, all said thyristors are turned on in the event of one pair becoming conductive simultaneously (shoot-through), a capacitor 17 being connected across the supply lines 12, 16 and arranged to ring with the circuit inductance so as to turn off all such thyristors in this event. The circuit shown may be arranged as a variable frequency inverter controlled by a gating circuit 53 so as to pulse-width modulate or provide adjustable time ratio of the output waveform so that the voltage fed to an induction motor 13 is proportional to frequency. Commutating thyristors 20A ... 43A and LC commutating circuits 28 ... 49 are included. In the event of shoot-through, the current in capacitor 17 increases so as to provide a signal in current transformer 60 which is supplied to detector 61 so as to turn on (at 62) all main thyristors. Detector 61 also inhibits further gating signals to the main and commutating thyristors. Inductors 21 ... 42 limit di/dt whilst an RC network (Fig. 2, not shown) limits dv/dt.
