A converter comprising a rectifier bridge in which each branch comprises n series-connected thyristors, each shunted by a series R.C. network, is characterized in that the capacitors C 1 are of the order of magnitude n/x - 1 times the leakage capacitance measured at the rectifying branch in question where n is the number of series connected thyristors in the branch, and x is the ratio between the allowable voltages across a thyristor during and before ignition. The resistors R 1 are so chosen that the time constant of each network is less than the time interval between the instant of ignition of the associated thyristor and that of adjacent thyristors in the sequence. The time displacement in the ignition instants may be determined by appropriately selecting the thyristors or by including delay elements in the ignition circuit. An inductor may be included in series with each rectifier and two chains may be connected in parallel, Fig. 5 (not shown).
