Abstract

1453970 Electro-depositing zinc SCHERING AG 10 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 57093/73 Heading C7B Zinc is electro-deposited from a neutral or acidic bath free from NH 4 Cl and containing a carboxylic or sulphonic acid of a 5- or 6-membered N-heterocyclic compound(which may contain a fused-on benzene ring), or a salt thereof. The compound may have the Formula N'-[-(R) n -X] m wherein N' represents a pyridine nucleus which may be substituted by alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy and/or OH, or a quinoline, isoquinoline, pyridone, pyrrole, piperidine, pyrrolidine or pyrrolidinone nucleus; R is a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical with up to 3 C atoms; X is -SO 3 H or -COOH; n is O, 1, 2 or 3; and m is 1 or 2. Many such compounds are listed, examples being pyridine-3- acetic acid, pyridine-3-sulphonic acid, and pyridine- 3-carboxylic acid. The bath may be aqueous with pH 3À0-7À0 and is used at 15-35‹C and a c.d. of 0À1-20 A/dm<SP>2</SP>. Specified bath components are; zinc salts - the chloride, sulphate, acetate and fluoborate; conducting salts, KCl, NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 ; brighteners, acetophenone, benzalacetone, benzoyl acetone, 3-acetyl coumarin, 3-acetyl pyridine and m-hydroxybenzaldehyde; wetting agent, a mixture of anionic alkylol sulphates and ethoxylated amphoteric surfactant; other components, H 3 BO 3 , acetic acid, benzoic acid, K benzoate, salicylic acid and its K salt, and K 2, 4- dihydroxybenzoate.
