Aluminium is produced by electrolysis of an aluminium compound in a fused halide salt bath by application across the cell of unidirectional square wave voltage. The pulse width may be from 10Á, secs. to 0.1 second. Typically the electrolyte is alumina dissolved in cryolite or a mixture of fluorides.
