A method for the preparation of 5- (3-sec.-aminoalkahidene) -10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo [a, d] cycloheptene of the formula I ** (See formula) ** wherein R is lower alkyl and A is a lower 1,2-arylene group or their acid addition salts, characterized in that a compound of formula II ** (See formula) ** wherein A has the above meaning, is reacted with a compound of the formula B = 0, wherein B is a radical of an aldehyde to obtain a compound of the formula III ** (See formula) ** wherein A and B have the above significance, and the compound thus obtained is reacted with a quaternizing agent of the formula RX, in which R has the above significance, and X represents the radical of a halogen hydrazide, preferably, chlorine, bromine and iodine, or an alkyl sulfate or a sulphonic acid, after which the desired compound of formula I is recovered in the form of its corresponding salt either as such or in the form of some other salt addition of acid.
