Abstract

1,170,058. Betaines and sulphobetaines. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 2 Dec., 1966 [2 Dec., 1965], No. 54179/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C7] 1-Benzyl pyridinium 3-carboxylate is prepared by quaternizing nicotinic acid with benzyl chloride in water to which sufficient NaOH is added to give a pH of 6À0 to 6À5, the mixture being refluxed. Isoquinoline N-propyl sulphobetaine is prepared by quaternizing isoquinoline with propane sultone in benzene. Other aromatic betaines are prepared by refluxing a pyridine compound (e.g. pyridine 3- or 4- carboxylic acid or 3-methyl carboxylate or 3- sulphonic acid or 3,5-dicarboxylic acid, or 4- cyanopyridine) with a quaternizing agent (e.g. benzyl chloride, 4-methyl or ethyl benzyl chloride, chloro-acetamide or acetaldehyde or - acetone or -acrylonitrile, methyl iodide, allyl bromide, 5-chloromethyl salicylic acid, phenacylbromide, 3,4-tetramethylene benzyl chloride, 3 - bromopropanol, 1 - bromo - 4 - chlorobutane, epichlorohydrin, or dichloro p - xylene) in water. The compounds are effective brightening agents for electroplating baths.
